Celebrate St Gertrude

Tuesday 17 March 2026 12:53

Cats have their own patron saint, St Gertrude of Nivelles. Gertrude was a 7th-century nun, the abbess of Nivelles (in modern day Belgium).  Cats didn’t ask for one, as if anyone is going do any patronising, it will be them, and anyway, a patron saint is a bit mid if you have once been worshipped as a god.

Gertrude only got the gig in 1982, more than a millennia after her death , but is a highly experienced patron saint, covering gardeners, sailors, travellers, refugees, the mentally ill, and plague prevention.  She was very efficient at dealing with  disease-bearing rats and mice; the thinking is that she must have had feline help, although there is no proof, and so, after a spot of retro engineering, she is now the unofficial patron saint of cats.

Is she the right choice? What do you think?
