Death of a Diplocat

Monday 16 February 2026 10:06

Very sad news. Palmerston, Emeritus Chief Mouser of the British Foreign Office, and Feline Ambassador in Bermuda has died. He passed away  peacefully on February 12, aged 12.

Belvedere and I, and all at Clowder Press, are very sorry to hear this and offer heartfelt condolences to his friends and colleagues for their loss.

Born in 2014, Palmerston rose from humble beginnings in Battersea to dazzling diplomatic heights. Launching his career at the age of two, he was appointed Chief Mouser at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office with an official residence in Whitehall. He made his first kill in April 2016.  After four gruelling years on the front line, he retired in 2020, but was lured back to public life by popular demand in 2025,  accepting a post with the Governor of Bermuda.

His silky diplomatic expertise  will be sorely missed, especially in the current chaotic global environment.

In the words of expert ailurophile, Dr Samuel Johnson, Palmerston was  “a very fine cat, a very fine cat indeed.”

(Of course, Johnson was referring to his cat Hodge but you follow our reasoning.)
